Shibuichi turtle kōgo by Kagawa Katsuhiro

A kōgo (incense box) in the form of a turtle. Finely chiselled shibuichi body with shakudo eyes and
copper shell. The interior patinated in gilt. Signed on the base "Katsuhiro saku (made by Katsuhiro)".
With original mulberry box inscribed "Turtle kōgo, Taisho 5th (1916), made by Kagawa Katsuhiro".

Kagawa Katsuhiro (1853-1917)
Kagawa Katsuhiro learned painting from Shibata Zeshin and became an assistant to Kano Natsuo.
In 1898 he became a professor of Tokyo University of the Arts and named Teishitsu Gigeiin
(Artist to the Imperial Household) in 1906.
